We have something a little special for you. Our next LCM featured artist is the wonderful award winning Scottish #Folk singer-songwriter Iona Fyfe. We have been big fans of Iona's music for a while now, so we are thrilled to have this exclusive for our LCM #SongOfTheDay. Today marks the release of her new single and the first play of her excellent live video for 'Guise of Tough', which was filmed at Celtic Connections in Glasgow. It's the opening track taken from the Iona's forthcoming debut album 'Away From My Window' set for release on the 24th March via Cairnie Records.

If you would like to see Iona live she will be starting her UK album tour at the end of March. Iona's London date is on 4th April at The Slaughtered Lamb in Farringdon.

"This is a song which I would often hear at singarounds, sessions and bothy ballad competitions. Growing up, I’d attend many Traditional Music and Song Association and Buchan Heritage Society events, in which I met many singers such as Joe Aitken, Geordie Murison, Jim Taylor and Scott Gardiner, all of whom would often o er the audience a great rendition of this bothy ballad. The song is about a man who is hired by “Jimmy Broon”, after an initial feed of bread and cheese, he soon finds that he is disappointed in the quality of his horses, and the plough doesn’t work either! I met the legendary Jock Duncan in 2012 at Turriff Bothy Ballad Competition where he was adjudicating the senior bothy ballad competition, and the terrifed 14-year-old me. Aberdeenshire folksinger, Iona Fyfe, has become one of Scotland’s finest young ballad singers, rooted deeply in the singing traditions of the North East of Scotland. A finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2017, Iona embraces the repertoire of her native North East throughout the UK and Europe. Described as “one of the most sunning voices on the circuit today” (Artree), "East", her debut 6-track EP encapsulating North East folk song was received with great acclaim.

Hailing from Huntly, Iona draws inspiration from source and revivalist singers and is a fine interpreter of traditional folk song in a contemporary yet sympathetic manner. A BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award competitor, she has performed at venues such as The Music Hall Aberdeen, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Mitchell Theatre and most recently The Royal Albert Hall in London. With her band, Iona has performed at high profile festivals such as Celtic Connections, Orkney Folk Festival and Folkest International Folk Festival in Italy.
