The very talented Vermont born but LA based Grace Potter has had a very eventful few years. After dissolving her long-time band the Nocturnals, she released a more pop solo album ‘Midnight’, in 2015. Shortly after that, she divorced her husband and Nocturnals drummer, Matt Burr, and began a new relationship with ‘Midnight’ producer Eric Valentine. Grace and Eric had their first child in 2018. All of these events serve as the background for the songs on her new album ‘Daylight’.

But by the end of 2017, Grace began to feel the call of the studio and soon started laying down tracks in the Topanga Canyon home she’d recently settled into with her husband, ‘Midnight’ producer Eric Valentine. Unsigned and entirely free of any pressure to appease, Grace slowly carved out the songs that now make up ‘Daylight’: an album that emerges as her most emotionally revealing, musically daring, and exactingly realized body of work to date. “When I finally started writing songs again - I did it for me.”

Grace’s seventh full-length and first release for Fantasy Records, ‘Daylight’ mostly came to life through a series of live-to-tape sessions at Valentine’s Hollywood studio, Barefoot Recording. Along with capturing the undeniable vocal power Grace’s previously shown in sharing the stage with The Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, and Neil Young, the album unfolds with an irresistibly vital sound birthed with the help of guests like Benmont Tench and Lucius. “Having all these incredible musicians playing live in the room with me gave the recording an urgency—like, this matters right now,” Grace recalls.

‘Daylight’ sees Grace moving away from the sound of her former band. Highlights include the stunning ‘Release’ a slow piano ballad driven by a beautiful vocal performance. The bare and personal, reflective and raw lyric mines the very depth of her soul. It's charts a broken relationship and serves as a watershed moment not only for this album but probably for the rest of her career. It feels like the ending of one important chapter and the start of the next chapter begins with the second half of ‘Daylight’.

After the wonderful "Release", Grace continue with a group of songs that directly address her breakup. These have the most honest and open lyrics. They are accompanied by perfect musical compositions that is reminiscent of her earlier Nocturnals work. This is the style that really suits her stunning and powerful voice. The second half of the album also features three more fantastic appearances by Lucius (‘Repossession’, ‘Desire’ and ‘Please’) adding to of my favourites on the album the powerful soul/blues future classic ‘Back To Me’.

Grace Potter has been on the threshold of great things and a massive breakthrough for many years. The release of ‘Daylight’ is definitely an important and giant step on that journey.

There is a saying that ‘good things come to those that wait’., Born out of hardship, frustration and disappointment Katey has created a piece of music magic. Blending folk, blues, soul, rock, country and gospel, Katey’s new debut album positively sparkles with creativity and outstanding quality music. ‘Revolute’ is a reflective and honest labour of love, full of heart and soul created by a singer-songwriter who deserves to be heard. The album’s title ‘Revolute’ is a old word from the 14th century carring the meaning ‘to revolve’ or be ‘rolled back’.

The revelation is that every song is saving Katey Brooks, too. “For as long as I can remember, singing has been my way of getting out what I need to say,” reflects the Bristol-born singer-songwriter. “I guess I’m lucky that I have songs.” After her early years as a best-kept secret, this rising songwriter’s media acclaim, celebrity endorsers and growing army of fans have brought her to an irresistible tipping-point.

For better or worse, it’s hard to imagine a songwriter with a deeper well of life experience to spill onto her lyric-sheet. Katey’s troubled childhood in a religious cult, her debilitating illness in her twenties and the shattering loss of her mother and best friend: all were blows that might have swallowed up a lesser character. But music was the balm, and it was always made on her terms evidenced by Katey’s early decision to reject a place at the star-making BRIT School and walk her own path.

First steps on Bristol’s open-mic scene pricked up ears. Show-stealing performances at Glastonbury, WOMAD and the Paralympics spread the word. Top-dollar recording sessions with Brian May, Bill Wyman, Paloma Faith and Joss Stone were offset by guitar-slinging gigs in squats, dive-bars and the occupied West Bank, where raw songs were born amongst the rubble.

Now, following up 2016’s acclaimed ‘I Fought Lovers’ EP, all of Katey’s scars and redemption are poured undiluted into the new material of ‘Revolute’. Written and self-produced by Katey herself with a beautiful and intimate mix from Paul Quinn, these eleven songs run the gamut of genre, but are bound together by their emotional honesty.

The album opens with the wonderful anthemic gospel-soul ‘Never Gonna Let Her Go’. A song of love and redemption full of sweeping harmonies, great guitar basslines and driving percussion with Katey’s vocals soaring over it all. It sees her kicks out defiantly against the past shamings for her sexuality. Super production and arrangements too. Very classy.

‘All Of Me’ is a wrench of a breakup ballad, pairing sparse guitar with intimate vocals, and slow-burning to a gospel-flavoured conclusion. ‘We The People’ offers a moody stomp and a salute to a lover who’s moved on, while ‘Golden Gun’ is a glowering standout, with choppy guitars and a lyric full of emotional violence.

Already released as a single to blanket acclaim, ‘In Your Arms’ is an intimate moment, with Katey’s almost-operatic voice and shimmering guitar locked in unison. ‘The Sweetest Things’ has folky fingerpicking and a nakedly honest vocal that reminds us that “sometimes the sweetest things were meant to pass you by”. And on an album of personal truths, Katey isn’t afraid to turn her observational powers on the social landscape, with the impassioned soul of ‘Burn It Down’ reminding women in the #MeToo era that victimhood is not their fault.

‘Jeremiah’ is a beautiful piano-led ballad that sails to the stars, while ‘Call Out’ is a stunning moment of quiet defiance (“Don’t let anybody take you down”). Even as the album plays out, there’s no let-up in emotional intensity. ‘In Light Of You’ combines ethereal guitar with treasured memories of a departed loved one – then throws a curveball as it breaks into a double-time groove. Finally, there’s traditional standard ‘Trouble So Hard’, here utterly owned by Katey, with ghostly chords and a vocal that never stops building.

Katey comments “Completing these tracks is not only the closure of a difficult chapter for me,” she says, “but the exciting beginning of something new, with my freedom finally found…”

‘Let It Roll’ is the excellent second album from Austin based Country Rock trio Midland. One thing that really stands out on the album is its wonderful production quality coupled with retro style Eagle’s harmonies and well written songs with memorable hooks.

Midland hark back to to the days of real Country Rock music and they have a great time doing it. Their songs are infectious and the trio ooze’s charisma. Penned by Jess Carson the opener and title track ‘Let It Roll’ puts their harmonies to the fore while providing an earworm melody. The rockier ‘21st Century Honky Tonk American Band’ moves them in a new direction. and is one of the highlights on the record.

As with their debut album ‘On the Rocks’, ‘Let It Roll’ showcases Midland’s versatility and strengths. The sumptuous ‘Cheatin’ Songs’ reference a trope of the Country music genre and it sounds wonderful. One of my favourite tracks ‘‘Put the Hurt On Me’ proves that the band are adept at stirring ballads as they are uptempo jams. Mark Wystrach’s vocal is so good on the track, showing a little more soul than we’ve heard in the past.

Elsewhere on the record the breezy ‘I Love You, Goodbye’ is destined to become a live favourite, ‘Cheatin’ By the Rules’ sounds like a lost gem from the golden age of Country music, and ‘Playboys’ pretty much sums up the band’s work hard, play hard ethos. Cameron Duddy takes the lead vocals on the dreamy ‘Lost in the Night’ while Jess Carson gets a chance to shine on album closer ‘Roll Away..

Another of my favourites on the album is ‘Every Song’s a Drinkin’ Song’ is almost the follow up to the bands breakthrough hit ‘Drinkin’ Problem’. The vocals are on point, the instrumentation is perfect, the harmonies are excellent and the bands personality drips from every single lyric.

Morganway was founded in 2016 by twin brothers Callum (vocals/bass) and Kieran Morgan (lead guitar), and genre-defying keyboard player Matt Brocklehurst. Their numbers quickly grew as their sound developed, with singer SJ Mortimer, whose growling vocals were a perfect complement to the Morgan brothers gritty guitar work, and fiddle player Nicole J Terry joining the ranks. On the choice of adding another lead instrument to the band, Callum explained that, "both Kieran and Nicole have very individual playing styles, and that combination allows their instruments to play off one another in quite distinctive ways, sometimes harmonising or in total contrast." The last member to officially join was drummer Ed Bullinger, whose diverse playing adds an urgent, yet tactful texture to the fray.

Inspired by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac and other classic guitar bands such as The Eagles, Morganway have quickly built a name for themselves on the UK live circuit. They have already received accolades from Radio 2's 'Whispering' Bob Harris, swathes of recognition from the country press, two nominations from the BCMA awards, support slots with The Shires and an Under The Apple Tree session. Peppered within their classic rock influences are aspects of country, Americana, pop and even bits of indie. Their ability to dance around genres yet keep a cohesive sound has been one of the principal reasons Morganway have such a captivating live show.

Ben Walker was recently hailed as one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world right now by Total Guitar magazine. A versatile composer as well as a celebrated instrumentalist, his passion is putting old jewels in new settings. After six critically acclaimed albums and a BBC Folk Award as a duo with Josienne Clarke and more than fifty records as a producer of other artists, Ben Walker's signature style has been sought out from punk to Proms, from Rough Trade to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

If you’re after more of his virtuosity on six strings, there’s ample evidence, but Echo is also a gentle reminder of why, with Ben Walker, ‘guitarist’ can never quite say it all.

In divided times, Echo reflects centuries-old words back to us for today, reimagined in new music. Drawing on field recordings from the EFDSS library, the newly established Sussex Tradition archive and lyrics from the 18th and 19th centuries, with composition influenced by contemporary classical and electronic music and Ben’s trademark fingerstyle, Echo combines original instrumental pieces, traditional songs and poems set to music.

The album features an enviable list of guest vocalists, with Kitty Macfarlane, Laura Hockenhull, fellow Folk Award winners Bella Hardy and Hazel Askew and rising stars Thom Ashworth, Laura Ward (Hickory Signals/Bird in the Belly) and JinnWoo (Bird in the Belly) lending their voices to the project.

As Ben says: ‘Making this album has felt a bit like a treasure hunt – finding lost pieces in Cecil Sharp House, going out with a field recorder to listen properly to where I am, digging back into a place name. The more I looked, the more I found – long-lost ballads and poems written as songs but hardly ever sung. I could hear the echoes of times that felt like ours, when people were having to think again about the national identity, about inequality, and how technology was changing things. People love to hark back to the good old days but the truth is it’s never been simple. Running underneath it all, some of the words we still use for rivers and suchlike are literally thousands of years old.

Sometimes a tune says all that needs to be said, but I felt like these old words held a lot we’d recognise too. It’s been awesome and a bit humbling to have so many amazing artists and friends keen to help me bring this project to life. I can’t thank them enough. Occasionally the only singer for a song is still the old chap who sang it in a pub eighty years ago, but then a young singer picks up something three hundred years old and it hits you like a brick.

There’s a touch of hauntology to it all – the shadows of the past are always there in the future, whether we like it or not. Weirdly, I’ve found a little solace in the fact that some things come and go, and some things stay.’
