Essex born singer-songwriter Lisa Wright is one of the fast rising stars of Country music in the UK. With an already impressive back catalogue Lisa recently released her excellent new four-track EP 'Mine Of Mine'. With four original songs including co-writes with the very talented Kaity Rae and Jake Etheridge, this new EP fizzes and sparkles with creativity and craft. Vocally on the EP Lisa reminds me of Ashley Monroe.
The EP opens with the wonderful lead single 'Tennessee', a co-write with up and coming singer-songwriter Kaity Rae. It's very catchy and my favourite track on the EP. It's heartfelt, reflective and personal, themed around Lisa's first visit to Nashville. It perfectly reflects the difficulties, self-discovery and reality of 'chasing the dream'. Dealing with relationships and falling in love for the first time is the up tempo 'Never Gonna Fall', is a lovely slice of Nashville pop.
The reflective and very honest title track 'Mine Of Mine' is a journey of self examination both good and bad. The constant battle to change and to have a more positive outlook and cut down taking on too much and 'burning the candle at both ends'. "I'm a beautiful liar when I tell you I'm dong fine.....this mind of mine. Finding ways to unwind...... redemption in a bottle of wine....never takes the blues away'. A co-write with another excellent young UK singer-songwriter is the gentle 'Giving Up The Ghost'. Proving than less is more the track is all soft strummed acoustic guitar with Lisa's great vocals soaring front and centre. I really liked the lovely electric guitar solo as well. It has some super and delicate moments with a beautiful retro feel, channeling some of the Country greats.
This is a fantastic release from one of my favourite current UK singer-songwriters and a fabulous example of the high quality of home grown music produced currently in UK Country. With the great success of The Shires, Ward Thomas and The Wandering Hearts in recent years, you get the feeling that Lisa could be soon joining them in wider recognition and success. She certainly deserves it.
