The Things We Cannot Say - Odette Michell
With a new debut EP 'By Way Of Night' released recently in late April our next LCM featured artist is Hertfordshire based folk-country singer-songwriter Odette MItchell. Vocally Odette reminded us of folk artists like Kate Wolf and Sandy Denny. Indeed there is a cover of the classic 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' by Sandy on the EP. For our LCM #SongOfTheDay we have chosen the last track on the EP 'The Things We Cannot Say' which features a striking viola introduction from Alex Tinlin (who is also the producer, and co-member of the folk-duo Tinlin) and has a gypsy-like feel to it. It speaks of the silence just before the dawn and the words that we feel are often trapped within.
If you would like to see Odetta live in London she will be performing at Uxbridge Folk Club on the 31st May.
Born in Yorkshire to an accomplished singer and classical pianist of Irish heritage, it would come as no surprise that Odette would take an interest in music from an early age; writing her earliest compositions on the piano and soaking up the general musical atmosphere in her youth.
After exchanging the piano for the guitar at the tender age of fifteen, Odette became inspired by the resurgence of folk and acoustic songwriters and began writing her own songs when she was just sixteen years old.
Growing up in the vibrant city of Cambridge allowed Odette to take advantage of the many stages and performance venues there, which included two club stage performances at the Cambridge Folk Festival - her first appearance there was when she was just 23 years old.
Since then, Odette has been invited to perform across the country at venues and festivals on the UK music circuit and in doing so has been fortunate enough to have shared the bill with musical legends such as Joan Baez, Eddi Reader, Bob Dylan and Jools Holland amongst others.
s well as identifying herself as a solid performer and songwriter in her own right, Odette has also lent backing vocals to a number of original recorded projects and albums, as well as being featured on a 'Best of British' exclusive compilation CD with her own material.
ow based in Hertfordshire, Odette's brand new EP 'By Way of Night', released in April 2018, marks a new and exciting chapter; with folk/country underpinnings and a trademark vocal style, Odette's new EP heralds a fine contribution to the rich acoustic tradition that the songs themselves emerged from.
