Botany Bay - Kelly Oliver
LCM #SongOfTheDay: The wonderful 'Botany Bay' the title track of multi-award winning Herfordshire based Kelly Oliver's forthcoming third album, which is due for release on the 28th September. Kelly is joined on the song by Toby Shaer (flutes, whistles, harmonium), Jamie Francis (banjo), Lukas Drinkwater (double bass) and Evan Carson (bodhran, percussion).
'Botany Bay' is a traditional English folk song. This version was collected in Hertfordshire and arranged by Kelly and producer Stu Hanna (Megson, Lucy Ward) The song tells the story of convicts that were banished from England and Ireland to Botany Bay in Australia during the 18th and 19th century, sometimes for as little as stealing a handcherchief. They were never to return home.
The video was filmed and edited by the excellent Rob Bridge at Redwood music photography.
Kelly will be on her UK album tour shortly with her London album launch date at the historic Cecil Sharp House in Camden on the 10th October. If you would like a personal copy the album is also available to pre-order from Kelly's Bandcamp page.
